5 years ago, on my way to Bangi I stopped at Petronas gas station for fuel then I saw this book published by Saba Islamic Media in their book section. Just by reading the title ‘ 20 Most Common Questions About Islam’ I bought the book authored by Dr. Zakir Abdul Karim Naik whom sacrificed his medical practise for full-time Da’wah activities. Dr. Zakir explains the teaching of Islam and clears misconceptions convincingly based on reason, logic and science. Renown for his critical analysis and spontaneous and convincing answer to challenging questions posed by audiences. This is one of them..

How can Islam be called the religion of peace when it was spread by the sword?

Answer: It is a common compliantamong some of non-Muslims that Islam would not have millions of adherents all over the world, if it had not been spread by the use of force. The following points will make it clear, that far from being spread by the sword, it was the inherent force of truth, reason and logic that was responsible for rapid spread of Islam.

Islam means peace. Islam comes from the root word ‘salam’ which means peace. It also means submitting one’s will to Allah (swt). Thus Islam is a religion of peace, which is acquired by submitting one’s will to the will of the Supreme Creator, Allah (swt).Sometimes force has to be used to maintain peace. Not each and every human being in this world is in favour of maintaining peace and harmony. There are many, who would disrupt it for their own vested interests.

Sometimes force has to be used to maintain peace. It is precisely for this reason that we have the police who use force against criminals and anti-social elements to maintain peace in the country. Islam promotes peace. At the same time, Islam exhorts its followers to fight where there is oppression. The fight against oppression may, at times, require the use of force. In Islam, force can only be used to promote peace and justice.

Opinion of historian De Lacy O’Leary. The best reply to the misconception that Islam was spread by the sword is given by the noted historian De Lacy O’Leary in the book “Islam at the cross road” (page 8) “History makes it clear however, that the legend of the fanatical Muslims sweeping through the world and forcing Islam at the point of sword upon conquered races is one of the most fantastically absurd myth that historians have ever repeated”.

Muslims ruled Spain for 800 years. The muslims in Spain never used the sword to force the people to convert. Later the Christian Crusaders came to Spain and wiped out the Muslims. There was not a single Muslim in Spain who could openly give the adzan, that is the call for prayers.

14 million Arabs are Coptic Christians. Muslim were the lords of Arabia for 1400 years. For a few years the British ruled, and for a few years French ruled. Overall, the Muslims ruled Arabia for 1400 years. Yet today, there are 14 millions Arabs who are Coptic Christians i.e Christians since generations. If the Muslims had used the sword there would not have been a single Arab who would have remained a Christian.

More than 80% non-Muslims in India. Muslims ruled India for about a thousand years. If they wanted, they had the power to convert each and every non-Muslim of India to Islam. Today more tha 80% of the population of India are non-Muslims. All these non-Muslims Indians are bearing witness today that Islam was not spread by the sword.

Indonesia and Malaysia. Indonesia is a country that has the biggest number of Muslims in the world. The majority of people in Malaysia are Muslims. Which Muslims army went to Indonesia and Malaysia?

East Coast of Africa. Similarly, Islam has spread rapidly on the East Coast of Africa. One may ask, if Islam was spread by the sword, which Muslims army went to the East Coast of Africa?

Thomas Carlyle. The famous historian, Thomas Carlyle in his book “Heroes and Hero Worship” refers to this misconception about the spread of Islam: “The sword indeed, but where will you get your sword? Every new opinion, at its starting is precisely in a minority of one. In one man’s head alone. There it dwells as yet. One man alone of the whole world believes it, there is one man against all men. That he takes a sword and try to propagate with that, will do little for him. You must get your sword! One the whole, a thing will propagate itself as it can”

No compulsion in religion. With which sword was Islam spread? Even if Muslims had it hey could not use it to spread Islam because the Qur’an says in the following verse:

“ Let there be no compulsion in religion: Truth stands out clear from error “ [ Baqarah 2:256 ]

Sword of the intellect/truth. It is the sword of intellect. The sword that conquers the hearts and minds of the people. The qur’an says in Surah Nahl, chapter 16 verse 125: “ Invite (all) to the way of thy lord with wisdom and beautiful preaching; and argue with them in ways that are best and most gracious “ [ An Nahl 16: 125 ]

Increase in the world religions from 1934 to 1984. An article in Reader’s Digest ‘Almanac’. Year book 1986, gave the statistics of the increase of percentage of the major opinion, at its starting is precisely in a religions of the world in half a century from 1934 to 1984. This article also appeared in “The Plaintruth’ magazine. At the top was Islam, which increased by 235%. And Christianity had increased only by 47%. One may ask, which war took place in this century which converted millions of people to Islam?

Islam is the fastest growing religion in America and Europe. Today the fastest growing religion in America is Islam. The fastest growing religion in Europe is Islam. Which sword is forcing people in the West to accept Islam in such large numbers?

Dr. Joseph Adam Pearson. Dr. Joseph Adam Pearson rightly says, “People who worry that nuclear weaponry will one day fall in the hands of the Arabs, fail to realize that the Islamic bomb has been dropped already, it fell the day MUHAMMAD (pbuh) was born”.

I wanna shows you my 1988’s shits that still work at it fucking best. It is Slayer “South Of Heaven” cassette and my Volvo 740 GLE.

So, this is my all times favorite car, I don’t know why? But I felt in love with Volvo ever since the first sight. I just like her old school looks and the safety part of it. Furthermore the car is heavy duty and super classic. Yes, I am poser in motoring. I remember the day when I bought this machine, I don’t even know anything about its engine. As I touch the steering for a driving test, I know. This car is for me. Like Bumblebee in Transformers movie, the car choose it owner.

Hahaha! To her previous owner, I must tell you she is happy with me. She became one of my favorite machines beside my computer, my amps and guitars. And suddenly I’m singing the verses from Prophanity’s song Swedish Steel…… “ All Men Ain’t Made For Metal, But All Metal Is Made For Men”!

The good thing about my job is taking my clients for a vacation. This time we choose War Museum located in Batu Maung Penang Island. The museum originally was built in 1930’s as the largest military operations complex in Malaysia, the base of regiment or departmental corps where servicemen trained. The British Royal Engineers and a work force comprises of local laborers turned this hill to fort complete with underground tunnels, intelligence and logistic center, halls, offices, ventilation shafts, cannon firing bays, sleeping quarters, cook house and medical infirmary. The shitty thing about this visit, I wonder they put Indonesian workers in charge of everything? From counter ticket to tour guides. I don’t see the rational to put an Indonesian to lecture you about our Malaya history? I just hope Malaysian tourism play attention about this serious matter. Aren’t there any native interested in our history anymore?

They told us this ammunation storage was used as torture box during Japs occupation. Imagine 4 person being slamed into this narrow wall with iron door.

There a few things captured my eyes, one is huge giant poster titled ‘ National Guard Of Malaya’ which is an old photo of Gurkhas soldiers. It is told that the Gurkhass was one of the best soldiers in the world. I don’t know about that but there is a death metal band under that name came from France which released a remarkable album " A Day Of Suffering". The second is an old BSA motorcycle hanging on the roof, from the laminated letter they put at the bike. It was hand written by the son of the bike owner named Alexander whom served as dispatch boy. He were captured during World War II and been sent to the infamous “Death Railway” in Burma.Well, as told by the Indonesian guide this military fortress has been tuned into house of pain, house of rape, torture chambers and mortuary during the Japanese invasion. Is those Japs were so cruel? I remember, reading some fact about Tan Seri P. Ramlee in local newspaper many years ago. Do you know whom tought P Ramlee to play violin and piano? Ironic, but he was Japanese soldier!

Back to the museum, I think this visit worth to be check out. You will impress with the historical facts, military gadgets, artifacts and relics. After that we went to Chowrasta Road for some ‘jeruk’ then we hit the road to Lata Bayu waterfall in Kedah.

Now, this is rotten signboard with immortal messages
